Giancarlo Tommasi, the a family and enologist of Tommasi Family Estates, is a man of passion and patience. Born in 1974, he has been the winemaker responsible for his family’s estates since 2002. Giancarlo’s dedication to winemaking mirrors his love for fishing, both activities requiring a keen understanding of time management.
Married to Francesca and a father of two, Giancarlo possesses qualities of constancy, sensitivity, and tenacity that he applies in the winery, just as he does while patiently angling by a riverbank. His winemaking philosophy revolves around meticulous attention to every aspect of the production process.
From studying the soils and vineyard exposures to selecting the ideal planting systems based on site characteristics and desired wine styles, Giancarlo leaves no stone unturned. He advocates for eco-friendly practices, favoring manual grape selection and nighttime harvesting during the harvest season.
In vinification, he minimizes mechanical intervention, opting for more natural processes whenever possible. For aging, Giancarlo prefers large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the wine to evolve gracefully in a way that aligns with his “philosophy of time.”
Giancarlo’s winemaking approach centers on enhancing tradition with modern elements to create wines that resonate with consumers’ tastes. His wines reflect elegance rather than sheer power, offering character, approachability, and the potential for graceful aging.
The hallmark of the “Tommasi style” is elegance, always grounded in highlighting the quality of individual terroirs and their cultural identities. Giancarlo’s journey with the Casisano Estate is a testament to his commitment to quality, as he selected it in 2015 based on the wine’s potential and invested tirelessly in vineyard care.
Despite not making significant changes in recent years, Giancarlo’s focus on revitalizing the vineyards has been crucial. He acknowledges the importance of experimentation, as seen in the plot where Guyot training is being tested.
The 2015 Brunello from Casisano Estate, situated in a cooler sub-zone, stands out for its finesse and natural acidity. The unique climate and soil composition create wines of exceptional quality.
In the coming year, Giancarlo and his team will embark on a journey to promote the 2015 Brunello, the result of five years of relentless effort. Their commitment to showcasing the wine’s excellence will take them to events and masterclasses in the United States and Canada, where wine enthusiasts will have the opportunity to savor the fruits of Giancarlo’s labor.
