David Tate Description
David Tate, a seasoned winemaker with a rich and diverse background in the wine industry, is a notable figure for his contributions at Barnett Vineyards and beyond. His journey in winemaking spans over fourteen vintages at Barnett Vineyards, starting in 2007, where he has been both the winemaker and General Manager. Tate’s experience is not just limited to California; his expertise is shaped by a global perspective gained through work in regions such as the Barossa Valley in Australia, Provence in France, and Canterbury in New Zealand. Moreover, his passion for wine has taken him to every major fine wine region around the world.
A graduate of Brock University in 2002, Tate earned an Honors Degree in Enology and Viticulture, solidifying his academic foundation in the field. His career trajectory includes a significant stint at Ridge Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where he honed his skills as an assistant winemaker for five years.
Outside the world of winemaking, Tate is a dedicated family man, often spending time with his son Nolan and indulging in his hobby of working on his vintage VW bus. His down-to-earth personality is reflected in his favorite wine, which he humorously notes is “the one in his glass.”
In 2011, Tate expanded his professional horizons by co-founding TATE, a boutique winery in Napa Valley, with his wife, Suzanne Tate. This venture focuses on producing small-lot wines from micro-vineyards, reflecting a philosophy of quality over quantity and a dedication to the craft of winemaking. The winery is a testament to David Tate’s commitment to excellence and innovation in the wine industry.
David Tate’s journey in the world of wine is marked by a blend of global experience, academic rigor, and a deep passion for winemaking. His contributions, both at Barnett Vineyards and through his own winery, have significantly enriched the wine landscape, showcasing his expertise and dedication to producing exceptional wines.
