Shafer One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a tribute to the enduring partnership of John and Doug Shafer, symbolizing their lasting bond with the term “a generation and a half.” This remarkable wine showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of Shafer Vineyards, led by esteemed winemaker Elias Fernandez, whose commitment to excellence is reflected in every bottle.

Sourced predominantly from two estate vineyards, nestled in the Ridgetop and foothills sites along the Vaca Mountains just south of Stags Leap District, the 2019 growing season blessed the grapes with abundant sunshine, resulting in rich color and elegant aromas and flavors.

This elegant, silky Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a seductive array of tasting notes. Upon pouring, it unveils bright black cherry, red currant, and cranberry aromas, accompanied by hints of lavender, allspice, and crushed herbs. The lush and vivid fruit on the palate is seamlessly integrated with ripe, cashmere-like tannins, promising years of beauty with careful cellaring.

Critically acclaimed, Shafer One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 has garnered impressive scores. Jeb Dunnuck awards it 96 points, praising its sweet cassis, violets, and graphite aromas, full-bodied richness, velvety tannins, and opulent yet balanced style. James Suckling, awarding 95 points, celebrates its polished and refined palate, fresh velvety tannins, and its long and vivid finish.

Wine Enthusiast bestows 95 points, describing it as a perennial powerhouse with dense layers of rich earth, dried herbs, soy, and leather, enveloping lushly dark, baked fruit. Wine & Spirits, with a score of 94 points, commends the wine’s clean line, infused with black-currant ripeness and blueberry-skin darkness, displaying the stamina to last for a decade or two.

Further recognition comes from Wine Advocate, which grants 93 points, noting its bright, vibrant notes of cassis, cedar, and black raspberries, underpinned by a lively backbone and a long finish of purity and precision. Vinous, also awarding 93 points, highlights its elegance, bright red-toned fruit, and freshness, making it a hidden gem in Napa Valley.

Ripe and open, with a friendly gush of raspberry, plum and cherry compote flavors wrapped loosely with a red licorice hint. Shows a savory accent that keeps the finish honest. Drink now through 2029.

A perennial powerhouse, this wine includes 12% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Tight, tannic and brawny in style, it offers dense layers of rich earth, dried herb, soy and leather, with unmistakable muscularity that wraps itself around lushly dark, baked fruit.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a gem of a wine that readers will love to have in their cellars. Sweet cassis, violets, and graphite define the bulk of the aromas, and it’s a classic Napa Valley Cabernet on the palate with its full-bodied richness, velvety tannins, and opulent yet balanced style. A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot, raised 20 months in new barrels, it’s going to keep for a solid two decades. Best After 2022

Blackberries and blueberries with cherries, too. The palate is very polished and refined with fresh, velvety tannins that provide tension and verve. It’s long and vivid with polish and beauty. Drinkable now, but give it at least three or four years to soften. Better after 2026.

Just released in February, this youthful blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot aged 20 months in new French oak. At 15.3% ABV, it’s well developed, with a satiny mouthfeel and a silky, elegant entry that speaks of chocolate and tilled soil. As it continues to romance the palate, hints of roasted coffee bean, blackberry, and slate emerge on tiptoe.

Outer quote mark The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is such an elegant wine. Bright, red-toned fruit and effusive aromatics lend striking brilliance to a Cabernet that is gracious and light on its feet. The 2019 stands out for its freshness and red fruit profile. It is beautifully done. One Point Five remains one of Napa Valley's little hidden gems; a wine that is seldom talked about in a discussion of the very top bottlings, but a Cabernet that never disappoints. Drink: 2024-2034.

Elias Fernandez focuses this wine on two estate vineyards, one at the base of the Stags Leap Escarpment, on hills surrounding the winery, plus the Borderline vineyard two miles south. His 2019 has a soil-driven scent, picking up on the rocky, volcanic scree that forms the base of these knolls. Yet, in the best tradition of Shafer cabernet, it follows a clean line, like a well-built rock wall, the wine’s fl avors infused with black-currant ripeness and blueberryskin darkness that keeps smoking up in the fi nish (the wine has consumed a substantial amount of new oak). This has the stamina to last for a decade or two.

Deep, dark, violets and chocolate notes here. Very appealing if you want a full-bodied, ripe style from Napa. Firm tannins, oak is clear and present but the overall balance is very good. Lovely fruit purity. Has a cool aftertaste which keeps everything nice and fresh.
