The Robert Biale Vineyards Black Chicken Zinfandel 2023 from Robert Biale Vineyards is a bold, flavorful Napa Valley Zinfandel with a story as memorable as its taste. Winemaker David Natali, along with the guidance of the Biale family and Bob Biale, crafts a wine that honors Aldo Biale’s 1940s “Black Chicken” code word—once used to secretly sell homemade Zinfandel. Today, the wine is legally made and proudly shared, but it still carries the spirit of Napa history and family tradition.
Vineyard & Winemaking
The fruit comes mainly from the Oak Knoll District, including the same family vineyard the Biales have farmed since the 1930s. It also includes grapes from their estate vineyard and neighboring long-time growers. The 2023 season was cool, balanced, and ideal for slow, even ripening.
Grapes were hand-picked between September 15 and October 20. Fruit was double-sorted, destemmed, and fermented in open-top tanks with gentle punch-downs. The wine then went through malolactic fermentation in 100% French oak barrels (30% new) and was aged for 15 months.
