Wine Description
Ramey Syrah Rodgers Creek 2018 is a bold and expressive wine from Ramey Wine Cellars, crafted by winemaker David Ramey. This Syrah-Viognier blend comes from the cool-climate Petaluma Gap AVA in the Sonoma Coast. The vineyard sits 800 feet high on the rocky, volcanic slopes of Sonoma Mountain, giving the wine its distinct savory character. The 2018 vintage was exemplary, with mild weather allowing for a longer hang time, leading to a wine full of depth and balance.
This Syrah pours a deep, inky purple with hints of ruby at the edges. Its rich color reflects the intensity of the fruit and the extended aging in new French barrels.
The nose is layered with complex aromas of smoked meats, white pepper, green olive, and grapefruit. These savory notes come from the cool climate and high-altitude site, making the wine distinctly different from a jammy, fruity Shiraz style.
On the palate, the wine delivers bold flavors of smoked meats, green olive, and white pepper, wrapped in a silky texture that hints at Pinot Noir-like balance. Bright acidity and firm tannins create a structured, exemplary finish. The fermentation with native yeast and malolactic conversion adds depth, while bâtonnage during aging enhances the mouthfeel. This wine was co-fermented with Viognier, adding a touch of floral lift to the mix. The barrels provide subtle spice, complementing the fruit without overpowering it.
This wine was harvested at 24.1˚ Brix on October 17. The Syrah and Viognier were co-fermented in a tank with 75% destemmed whole berries and 25% whole Syrah clusters. It aged 26 months sur lies with monthly bâtonnage in 100% new French barrels. Finally, it was bottled without filtration in February 2021, preserving its natural depth and purity. This Ramey Syrah has been praised for its savory profile, layered flavors, and refined balance.
Critics highlight its smoked meats, white pepper, green olive, and grapefruit notes, which showcase the cool-climate terroir. Unlike overblown Shiraz, this wine leans toward an elegant, restrained style, making it an excellent choice for Syrah lovers who appreciate finesse over power.
