Introducing the Lopez De Heredia Vina Gravonia Blanco 2014, a masterpiece crafted by Winemaker Mercedes Lopez de Heredia, reflecting the exceptional vintage rated VERY GOOD by the DOC Rioja Board. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, this vintage is a triumph of meticulous winemaking.

The wine pours a slightly developed pale gold, a visual testament to its aging potential. On the nose, it opens with freshness and complexity, a bouquet that reveals aromas of the third generation. Notes of white nuts, honey, and a subtle lactic essence reminiscent of Parmesan cheese intertwine elegantly with hints of dried lemon slices. This intricate symphony of scents prepares the palate for a unique experience.

Upon the first sip, the Viña Gravonia Blanco 2014 unfolds as a fruity revelation. Complexity continues to reign, with flavors that have developed over time. The palate resonates with remarkable finesse and bright tanginess. Its surprising freshness defies expectations, invigorating the senses. The texture is slightly chewy, lending a delightful dimension to the wine’s character, and the finish extends seamlessly, leaving a long-lasting impression.

This wine, a pure expression of the Viura grape variety sourced from their own vineyards, has matured gracefully for 4 years in barrels, undergoing a meticulous racking process. An additional period of bottle rest has allowed it to refine further, unfiltered and bottled in 75 cl. bottles. With an alcohol volume of 12.5% Vol. and a very dry profile, it pairs harmoniously with a diverse array of dishes, from grilled and fried fish to well-seasoned white meat and pasta.

Notable critical acclaims further underscore the excellence of the Viña Gravonia Blanco 2014. Awarded 95 points by both James Suckling and Robert Parker, it demonstrates its undeniable quality. Suckling highlights the wine’s astonishing freshness, tanginess, and slightly chewy texture, while Parker describes it as vibrant, citrusy, and nutty, praising the winery’s commitment to freshness.

With only 25,000 bottles produced, this vintage encapsulates the dedication of Lopez De Heredia to producing wines that are not just timeless but an embodiment of the terroir and craftsmanship that define the Rioja region. The Viña Gravonia Blanco 2014 stands as an ode to tradition and a testament to the House’s unwavering commitment to producing exceptional wines.

77 reviews for Lopez De Heredia Vina Gravonia Blanco 2014

    1. Kenneth Byers

Gravonia is promising, but too young. Nose is gorgeous, complex, typical. Cellar it for 5 years: 2009 or 2007 or even better 2005.

    2. Christina Anderson

Beautiful wine with aromas of dill, almonds, and overripe yellow fruit. High acidity, slightly oily, but less impressive on the palate than the nose.

    3. Mattie Clements

      “Floral and unique, but delicious.”

    4. Thelma Green

Fresh lime citrus with good acidity and subtle oak. Tasted blind, initially shy nose with Alsatian Riesling aromas and slight skunky notes. First time trying Viura. 91+.

    5. Brian Chernosky

“Lush, fresh and in high demand. A white Bordeaux-like wine that’s amazing.”

    6. Martha Simmons

Delightful and food-friendly wine with waxy apricots, lemon oil, wet hay, and dried grass notes. Immense freshness and complexity, with a sturdy backbone and breezy oomph.

    7. David Turner

Complex white with apricot, orange zest, lime, floral, waxy and spicy notes. Good acidity and lingering finish. Enjoyable.

    8. Anita Hendrickson

Golden yellow with beeswax, apricot, lime, and rancio on the nose. Palate confirms nose with almonds and terrific salinity. Perfect with grilled fish. Drink now or age 5-7 years.

    9. Rose Mcanulty

Superior complexity with just the right side of oxidative notes. Price is rising, but it’s a wonderful food wine. Perfect with uni, scallops, and foie.

    10. Joseph Shankle

Great Gravonia, nutty, strong personality, aged well with complex flavors and structure.

    11. Richard Prillaman

LdH blanco has a youthful and compact taste, with a mix of lemon, nuts, and oil. It has a waxy, round, and tangy flavor, but is still a bit young.

    12. Gregory Gonzalez

Consistent with previous vintages, this wine fits my preferences with its oaky oxidative notes of grilled lemon, nutty honey, hay, and almonds.

    13. Tom Winters

Acidic with oak and lemon zest notes. Strong potential for aging. Enjoyable white Rioja.

    14. Douglas Clay

Dry and complex with cellar and herb notes. High acidity and long finish. Fruit is dried and minimal. Day 2 – less aroma, slightly rounder taste.

    15. Mario Harrison

Distinctive and fresh with savory marzipan and complex flavors. Fabulous long finish with bracing acid backbone. Goes beautifully with curried prawns. Excellent.

    16. Elbert Koenig

Bright and complex with notes of citrus, florals, and honey. Good acidity and a lingering finish. A favorite choice.

    17. Randy Powell

Vibrant and complex with ripe pear, citrus fruits, and a hint of exotic fruits. Intense and uplifting with a fresh and friendly taste. So good.

    18. Diane Robinson

Impressive golden wine with bourbon-like aroma, caramel, honey, and brown sugar notes. Lime dominates its fruity taste with balanced acidity and medium mouthfeel. The finish is medium plus.

    19. Jeffrey Sweeney

Fresh and creamy with a key lime pie and jackfruit flavor. Enjoyable on its own. Not for everyone.

    20. Connie Madison

Class of its own. Full-bodied yet fresh. Hypnotic nose and palate with long finish. Excellent vintage.

    21. Keith Aldridge

World-class food wine with lightly oxidized apple and piercing minerality.

    22. Donald Peeden

Fresh and light with hints of coconut, nuts, pastry, lemon and lemon pith. Better than the 2009.

    23. Laura Hoyt

      Tart with no fruity notes.

    24. Kristen Clark

Creamy and young with lemon sherbet and salty nut aromas. Salty palate. Delicious now with a long runway ahead.

    25. Jeanie Basso

Creamy lemon sherbet nose, salty palate. Delicious now, but with a long runway ahead.

    26. Jeri Martin

Gold with intense aromas of lemon, mint, beeswax, and new leather. Flavors echo dry Sauternes with a hint of nuttiness. Long, complex finish. 5/5.

    27. Lois Crandall

Gold with intense nutty, lemon, mint, beeswax, and leather aroma. Great flavors, dry Sauternes replay, hint of nuttiness, complex finish. 5/5.

    28. Justin Lusk

Comparable to Tondonia Blanco, with a saline bouquet and notes of lemon and hazelnut. Medium-bodied with good acidity. Great value at under 30€ for the Lopez de Heredia house style.

    29. Kimberly Robertson

Surprisingly less oxidative than expected, smells like aged Sauternes. Candied oranges, bruised apple, honey, white flowers and a little coconut on the nose. Palate is salty, with a mouth-watering acid. Rounded mouthfeel from extended oak aging, with vanilla finish. Fantastic juice for <$40.

    30. Jerry Volker

Bright yellow color, intense and clean aroma with hints of white fruit, citrus, and coffee. Full-bodied with balanced acidity and a fruity finish. One of the best Spanish white wines and reminiscent of a dry Sauternes.

    31. Lauren Dupree

Golden yellow color. Aromas of bread, nuts, white flowers, and honey. Slightly oxidized taste with medium length. Overall, very good.

    32. Lowell West

Superb golden yellow color. Aromas of bread, nuts, white flowers, and honey. Slightly oxidized taste with notes of bread and nuts. Medium length. Very good.

    33. Mary Britt

Strong lemon peel taste fades by day 2, giving way to secondary characteristics. Pairs well with aged manchego.

    34. Michael Fisher

Lopez de Heredia tasting at Utregs Wijnhuis: Light, citrusy with subtle oak finish and a hint of apple. Lacks substance.

    35. Melinda Brito

Enjoyed at Zoldering, this wine is already delicious with notes of lemon, good acidity, nuts, and beeswax. Although the finish is shorter than its big brother, Tondonia, it’s still a great wine. With age, it can improve up to 92/93.

    36. William Baltz

Delicious now, with lemon, good acidity, nuts, and beeswax. Shorter finish than Tondonia, but still a great wine. Will improve with age up to 92/93.

    37. Ricardo Johnson

Medium-yellow wine with a sweet melon and lemongrass aroma. Starts slightly sweet, then becomes marvelously dry with mineral notes. Suitable for complex meals. ****

    38. Byron Jarrell

Intense nose of beeswax, white flowers, and cheese. Perfectly balanced acidity complements grilled mackerel. Long and complex with a promising future.

    39. Vicki Gore

Yellow gold with medium legs, no sediment. Smells like lime, apricot, peach, stoniness, oak, coconut, vanilla, almond, hazelnut, honey and leesy. Medium body, smooth texture, high acidity, long finish. Incredible value.

    40. Shirley Canal

Intensely aromatic with beeswax, white flowers, and cheese. Perfectly balanced with grilled mackerel. Long and complex with a bright future ahead.

    41. Sherry Decena

Yellow gold in color with medium legs and no sediment. Aromas of lime, apricot, peach, mineral, oak, and more. Medium-bodied with smooth texture, high acidity, and long finish. Incredible value.

    42. Leroy Pinder

Review: Wine needs time. Day 2: closed with minor cork taint that comes and goes. Day 3: wine rounded out, delicious but not the best vintage. Maybe in a dumb stage. Try again in 6 months.

    43. Steven Carter

Golden appearance, expressive nose of mature apple, grilled sugar, and bourbon. In the mouth, oxidative notes dominate with a very dry finish. Not for everyone, but I love it!

    44. Beth Barrett

Golden appearance with good density. Expressive nose with mature apple, burnt sugar, and a hint of bourbon. The wine’s oxidized notes dominate the palate, resembling fino sherry or Jura yellow wine. It’s very dry and not for everyone, but I love it!

    45. Gwen Doleman

Full-bodied with a strong aroma and taste of citrus, nuts, and browned butter. Slightly too oaky. Sip slowly.

    46. Tracy Garcia

Balanced and intriguing wine with floral and citrus notes on the nose, and a fresh finish with sherry and almond accents. Nice overall.

    47. Daniel Palacios

Balanced and intriguing wine with floral and citrus notes, hints of honey and cloves. Smooth finish with sherry and almond notes.

    48. Janet Ruiz

Youthful and closed at first, but wakes up after an hour. Keeps improving and has a long life ahead. Great for those who like this style.

    49. Billy Silva

Lovely, distinctive yellow fruits with hints of marzipan and waxiness. Great acidity. Amazing over three nights.

    50. Cheryl Bursey

Delightfully distinct with savory marzipan and earthy yellow fruits. Hints of waxiness pair perfectly with its lovely bracing acidity. Fabulous over three nights.

    51. Christopher Tijerina

Nutty and spicy nose with a tart finish. Scored 14.5/20.

    52. Elwanda Ridling

Silky-fine texture and unique flavors of orange peel and tangerine spice. Complex finish with smoky minerals and Indian spices. Great with all kinds of food.

    53. Karen Mercado

LdH white: Interesting, complex, enjoyable wine with notes of lemon, citrus, dill, wet moss, soil, and mushrooms. Controlled chaos in a bottle.

    54. Verna Bardwell

Waxy fruit, dryness, soft mouthfeel, firm structure. Unique but not spectacular. Price hinders enjoyment.

    55. Andrea Pittman

Great wine, perfect balance between oxidized and fresh flavors. Disappointed it wasn’t a magnum.

    56. Corinne Rivers

Medium-gold color with an oxidative nose of granny smith apple, quince, and baked raisin. Bone dry palate with medium acidity and fresh almond qualities. Excellent with big, unpairable foods like tomato sauce pasta or salad with vinaigrette. Best at cool room temp with 30 mins of air in a narrow decanter.

    57. Penelope Caspers

Fresh and lively with acidity, but different than past vintages. Hints of butter scotch and sherry, but not a favorite. Warm year taste.

    58. Alberto Greenwood

Oak needs time to integrate. Vanilla honeydew gem.

    59. Patrick Cole

Bright acidity, crisp fruit, oak, honey notes, toasted almond, buttery. Accessible and cheaper than Tondonia Blanco. Delicious.

    60. Kim Hammack

Bright acidity, crisp fruit, oaky notes, and buttery finish. Accessible and cheaper than Tondonia Blanco. Delicious.

    61. Rebekah Horton

Good wine. Takes three nights to open up. Not a spectacular vintage but still very good and unique.

    62. Antonio Jarrett

Intensely long with great value, notes of almond, honey, apricot, oak, nuts, lemon, caramel, and minerality.

    63. Amanda Lopez

Intense and lengthy, great quality-price ratio. Notes of almond, honey, apricot, oak, nuts, lemon, caramel, and minerality.

    64. Kenneth Delgado

Wait a few years, oak will integrate.

    65. Lanie Honokaupu

Perfect elegance after 2 hours. Lovely white. Casa Julian approved.

    66. Nancy Welch

Great potential, sherry notes dominate. Best after 5 years. Avoid if not a sherry fan.

    67. Karen Forde

Amazing nose with butterscotch, spice, and lime followed by a sweet nut. Razor-sharp palate with citrus, salt, and spice. Medium + length finish. Great combination of acid, citrus, and minerals. Perfect for aging. Hard to find a similar wine at this price.

    68. Richard Cuellar

Day 1: Lemon curd, slightly creamy, fresh. Oak prevalent but will integrate soon. Better than 2014.
Day 2: Drink at cellar temp. Cherimoya curd, closed. Oak still up front. Give it another day.
Day 3: Red apple, wet wool, good acidity, tannin. Oak still prevalent. Every sip different.

    69. Loretta Martinez

Balanced oak and citrus. Medium body with minerality. Perfect for now or in 5-10 years.

    70. Nancy Ford

Review: Not sherry-like. Nose: Sneakers, rubber, wax, chemicals. Palate: Soft entry, low acidity, bitterness and vanilla notes with bread aftertaste.

    71. James Pickup

Fresh lemon with complex nutty and mushroom notes. Decant and serve slightly above refrigeration temperature.

    72. Victoria Wallace

Excellent texture, perfectly integrated oak, and pairs amazingly with mushroom risotto – Acrux completion dinner at Kerridge’s is a must-try.

    73. James Parker

Young with apricot, yellow fruit, smoke, beeswax, honey, and acidity. Fantastic to drink now or hold.

    74. Eric Fullbright

Liked it, but not as much as the 2014. Notes of almonds, flor, lemon meringue, vanilla custard, with a nice waxiness and heft. Possible hidden residual sugar.

    75. Alfonso Buffington

Complex wine with hay, almond, dried apricot, and citrus peel notes. Balanced acidity and good length.

    76. WA

The 2014 Viña Gravonia Blanco always smells of the cellar with some mushroomy aromas and flavors, and it’s very classical, with 12.5% alcohol, more vibrant than the 2015 I tasted next to it. To María José López de Heredia, Gravonia has to be very fresh with citrus freshness and some nuttiness but without the bitterness of the aged Tondonia, which they compare with the Carbonieux and such wines from Graves. These are ancient vines and the grapes are pristine. 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021. They bottled later because of COVID-19, and the extra time was spent mostly in oak vat but maybe some in barrel

    77. JS

Subtly oxidative and old-style, with refined, lactic notes of Parmesan cheese and hints of white nuts and honey to the sliced dried-lemon character. Very bright, tangy and flavorful, with astonishing freshness on the palate. Slightly chewy and very long.
