The Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Rita’s Crown 2020 is a beautifully dark and alluring wine that draws you in with its enticing aromas and flavors. This Kosta wine Pinot Noir comes from the esteemed Rita’s Crown vineyard, located in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation of California. Planted in 2007, Rita’s Crown is the highest vineyard site in the region, boasting a predominantly south-facing orientation and high elevation. This winery is often misspelled as ‘kosta brown winery’ and ‘costa brown winery’ as well.

This allows the vines to receive a tremendous amount of sunshine and coastal wind, contributing to the wine’s unique character. The vineyard is steep and planted using high-density spacing, and it is organically farmed on typical diatomaceous earth, which adds distinct intensity to the fruit.

This Kosta Browne Pinot Noir is a deep ruby color. The nose opens with stunning aromas of brandied Morello cherry, wildflowers, and hints of violet. These floral and cherry notes evolve into complex layers of red and black fruit, such as pluot and black currant, accented by subtle baking spices.

On the palate, this wine is deeply dark and alluring. It features supple, fine-grained tannins and zesty acidity, which add poise and purity to the ripe fruit flavors. You’ll notice black cherry, cola, and freshly smashed currant, framed by powdery tannins. Tantalizing violet notes deliver an extraordinarily long and worthwhile finish, making this wine both elegant and serious.

The Rita’s Crown vineyard, part of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, benefits from its high elevation and steep hillside, allowing the vines to thrive. The soil composition includes sandy/clay loams and diatomaceous earth, which adds a distinct minerality to the wine. The winemaking process for this Pinot Noir involves fermentation in 70% wood and 30% concrete, followed by aging in a mix of new French and Austrian oak, as well as wood casks. This careful élevage enhances the complexity and depth of this kosta browne 2020 pinot noir.

James Suckling awarded this wine 96 points, praising its solid core of luscious fruit, blue fruits, graphite, and lavender, with very fine tannins that are polished and extremely long. Wine Enthusiast gave it 95 points, highlighting its dark, ripe, and elegant nose with strawberry, raspberry jam, and a hint of cocoa. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated it 94 points, noting its wild berry preserves, mixed tea leaves, pepper, and floral perfume. Wine Spectator scored it 93 points, describing it as lush, with dark cherry and boysenberry fruit, anise, and sweet toast, finishing with a refined perfume.
