Nestled in Northern California, Sonoma County’s expansive wine landscape is characterized by three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma, and Sonoma Coast, each encompassing multiple sub-AVAs. The county’s topography allows for a remarkable diversity in climate and soil.

Sonoma Valley, situated in the southeastern corner, shares a resemblance with Napa Valley across the Mayacamas Mountains. The cooling fog originating from San Pablo Bay is a hallmark of this region’s climate. Coupled with coastal breezes, Sonoma Valley enjoys a unique balance of cool temperatures and abundant sunlight. Northern Sonoma, spanning the northern two-thirds of the county, harbors prominent AVAs like Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley. Sonoma Coast, although not a continuous viticultural area, serves as a workaround for labeling laws. This designation aids wineries with vineyards scattered across various AVAs, enabling them to maintain “estate bottled” status. It stretches from the county’s coast to more inland territories, bridging the gap between Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Valley.

The grape varieties cultivated in Sonoma County are reflective of California’s rich viticultural tapestry. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the red category, while Merlot and Zinfandel retain their significance. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir flourish in cooler climates, and Sauvignon Blanc offers a refreshing alternative. The region is also embracing Syrah and Viognier, showcasing its evolving experimentation.

Sonoma County’s wine flavor profile is characterized by the convergence of climatic blessings. Cool fog and ocean breezes are balanced with sunny days, resulting in wines that are both vibrant and expressive.
