Established in 2011, Hors Categorie stands as the inaugural vineyard on the steep inclines of the North Fork of the Walla Walla River, nestled in the shadows of the Blue Mountains. Positioned at the convergence point of the North Fork and Walla Walla River, the vineyard’s Syrah vines tenaciously grasp the hillside beneath rugged cliffs, surrounded by rocky formations. These vines delve into the fractured basalt soil in search of sustenance.
This site offers an unparalleled terroir, an exceptional gem within the American viticultural landscape. Its distinct climate, exposure, and topography craft an unmatched environment for winemaking. Harvey Steiman of Wine Spectator, during his inaugural visit in 2006, highlighted the rare synergy of expressiveness, potency, and weightlessness found in their American Syrah.
Inspired by his love for Châteauneuf-du-Pape in France, Christophe Baron, founder of Cayuse Vineyards, commenced Hors Catégorie. His discovery of this vineyard in 2005, resembling France’s Hermitage region, further underscored his vision. Despite challenges, he passionately nurtured this vineyard, bringing his belief in an “American jewel” to fruition. Biodynamic farming thrives here, fostering a holistic ecosystem alongside the 3,555 densely planted vines per acre.
Hors Catégorie, aptly translating to “beyond categorization,” stands at the pinnacle of innovation, challenging conventions, and echoing nature’s harmony in winemaking.
