Chateau du Retout Description
Located in the heart of the Haut-Médoc appellation, nestled between the renowned regions of Margaux and Saint-Julien, lies Chateau Du Retout. Established on a 34.5-hectare expanse of deep gravel and clay terroir, this vineyard has been a testament to winemaking tradition since its inception. The Kopp family, stewards of Chateau Du Retout for over five decades, have meticulously crafted superior Cru Bourgeois wines that beautifully blend freshness and enduring flavors.
The history of Chateau Du Retout is marked by resilience. In the late 19th century, the phylloxera crisis wreaked havoc on French vineyards, causing many to vanish. Chateau Salva de Camino and Chateau Retou-Rosset, both Crus Bourgeois, faced similar fates along with smaller estates. It was only in the 1950s that the Kopp family, having settled in the Medoc, rekindled these domains. Through unwavering patience, they united the three vineyards under the banner of Chateau Du Retout, breathing life back into the region.
Today, Helene and Frederic Soual-Kopp, daughter and son-in-law of the Kopp family, meticulously oversee Chateau Du Retout. With a dedication to precision and care, they enhance the local landscape and terroir to produce impeccably balanced and refreshing wines. Chateau Du Retout stands not just as a winery but as a testament to the enduring spirit of winemaking and the preservation of viticultural heritage.
