Chateau de Beaucastel Description
Chateau de Beaucastel, nestled in Courthezon, in the northern Chateauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhone, is a renowned wine producer that has been crafting exceptional wines for centuries. Its storied history dates back to 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel acquired a barn and vineyard plot, etching his family’s crest into the walls. In 1909, the estate passed into the capable hands of scientist Pierre Perrin, and today, his grandsons, Jean-Pierre and François, continue the family’s winemaking legacy.
Situated in the northeast corner of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation, just southeast of Orange, the estate spans approximately 100 hectares, with three-quarters of the land devoted to crafting Chateauneuf-du-Pape AOC wines.
Chateau de Beaucastel proudly cultivates all 13 permitted grape varieties for Chateauneuf-du-Pape, each adding a unique character to their blends. The vines, aged up to 50 years, thrive in soil rich in sandstone, rocks, and limestone, offering excellent drainage and yielding concentrated berries. Hand-picked grapes are vinified in separate lots to ensure consistency, with oak used judiciously.
Chateau de Beaucastel’s flagship Chateauneuf-du-Pape combines Grenache and Mourvedre, accompanied by a medley of other grape varieties, including a portion of white grapes. The estate also produces a Chateauneuf-du-Pape blanc, predominantly Roussanne with Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, as well as a varietal Roussanne and a remarkable Mourvedre-based red wine, Hommage a Jacques Perrin, honoring the estate’s esteemed heritage. With a commitment to tradition and quality, Chateau de Beaucastel continues to craft wines that captivate connoisseurs worldwide.
