Alma Viva Winery Description
Alma Viva Winery, also known as Almaviva, is a prestigious wine producer located in the Maipo Valley, Chile. Established in 1997, this winery is a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild from Bordeaux and Concha y Toro, one of Chile’s largest wine producers. Their vineyards are situated in Puente Alto, at the southern edge of Santiago, where the climate and terroir create ideal conditions for growing premium grapes. This region has long been recognized as one of the best spots in Chile for producing high-quality wines, making it a perfect location for Alma Viva’s vision.
The vineyards at Alma Viva cover around 85 hectares (210 acres), mainly consisting of stony soils. These soils are located on the highest terrace of the Maipo River, where the stony terrain and excellent drainage allow the vines to thrive. With advanced drip irrigation systems and meticulous attention to each vineyard block, the winery can ensure that every grape reaches its fullest potential. The farming practices at Alma Viva focus on sustainability, combining traditional techniques with modern technology to produce wines that express the true essence of Chilean terroir.
The winemaking team at Alma Viva is led by the talented winemaker Martín Hurtado, who works closely with assistant winemaker Isabel Briones. Together, they craft wines that blend Chilean tradition with Bordeaux excellence. Their expertise and dedication to quality can be tasted in every bottle they produce.
Alma Viva specializes in Bordeaux-style blends, mainly featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, and Cabernet Franc, with occasional touches of Merlot and Petit Verdot. The winery’s flagship wine, the Almaviva wine, has gained international acclaim for its complex and sophisticated character. It showcases a blend that usually comprises 65 to 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 to 25 percent Carmenère, and smaller quantities of other Bordeaux varietals. Another prominent wine from their portfolio is EPU, a second wine that embodies a similar style but offers a more approachable profile. EPU is crafted from the same vineyards and typically matures in oak barrels previously used for aging the Almaviva wine.
Alma Viva has produced an impressive lineup of wines over the years, reflecting the mastery of their winemaking and the richness of their vineyards. Some of their notable wines up to 2023 include:

Alma Viva’s commitment to quality and tradition has established it as a benchmark for Chilean wines, often compared to the great Cabernet-based wines of Bordeaux and Napa Valley. By incorporating the distinctive Carmenère grape, they have created a signature taste that sets their wines apart. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or someone looking to explore premium Chilean wines, Alma Viva Winery offers an unforgettable experience.
Alma Viva Winery represents the pinnacle of Almaviva Chile wine, combining traditional Bordeaux craftsmanship with Chilean terroir. The Almaviva winery delivers refined, balanced, and elegant wines that captivate enthusiasts worldwide.
